BREEZY HILL FARM WEEKLY UPDATE
- Finished haying for this year. Weather was perfect, now we need 2-3 inches of rain. We are very dry. The last two or three weeks the rains went north, south or stopped at the state line.
- Remember, to get your chickens from Virginia (raetdy@aol.com). She lets them sleep at night. I think she is having a chicken day this coming weekend.
- When you pick up chickens or pork in Holden, be sure to stop at Galle's. A great small town restaurant. They make pies and their rolls from scratch. Nice place. It is located on 2nd street, toward the east end, on the south side of the street. Second street is the main street (Hwy 58).

Raising food is really about building soil, and modern agricultural practices are degrading million year-old topsoils, without any attention to rebuilding them. Spreading toxic chemicals, monoculture, using genetically engineered seed, generating toxic runoff and destroying biodiversity are all examples of working against nature. Mycorrhizae not only assist the plants in staying vital and healthy, but they enrich the soil and improve its productivity, add organic matter, protect crops from drought, and increase the overall balance and resilience of the ecosystem. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2013/08/10/mycorrhizae-plant-communication.aspx?e_cid=20130810_PRNL_art_1&utm_source=prmrnl&utm_medium=email&utm_content=art1&utm_campaign=20130810

BREEZY HILL FARM WEEKLY UPDATE
- Last call for a "dirt" hog. If you want a half or a whole I need to know before Monday.
- For chickens and turkeys contact Virginia at raetdy.aol. There is another chicken day coming soon. Fill your freezer for the winter and get an excellent turkey for Thanksgiving.
- Spent last weekend in Debra's hometown in Illinois. That is monoculture country. People have 160 acres of corn or soybeans on at least one side of their house. It's everywhere and instead of admiring it, I could only think of my hard earned tax dollars that supports this insanity. On the way to a restaurant in a nearby small town we noticed several large dairies. On the way home, after dark, we noticed the lights were on in the dairies. Why? Well, just like the chicken "factories" the "farmers" have learned from the AG boys to keep the lights on and they will keep eating and will make drumsticks faster and produce more milk. My cows sleep at night. Are you buying milk and eating chicken breasts from animals that are not allowed to sleep? Contact Virginia for your chickens.
- Cattle are doing very well, even though we have not had enough rain. End of September we should be filling the long awaited orders for freezer beef. Our cattle sleep at night.
- We really enjoyed our nectarines. If you have never had one ripe of the tree then you have no idea how great a fruit they are. The store nectarines are horrible. We have had a wonderful crop of peaches this year. Have made a lot of jam. Lots of jars of pickles and from just one hill of cucumbers. Fruit trees are tricky and you have to be patient.
- We are enjoying our KOMUCHA and home ice cream.

BREEZY HILL FARM WEEKLY UPDATE
- Who is Kiger? I have a deposit from them, but no record for that name. Help!!
- Wheat harvest was a bust. Several lessons learned for the future. We will have enough for next years planting and wheat berries for bread. Chickens will have to eat rye and oats. I sure am glad I planted the oats despite my neighbor's doubts. It was much later due to the cold (remember the snow in May?). Had I planted in Feb they would not have sprouted (remember how dry it was until the snow?). We will clean the wheat and rye next week, need two days with no rain in the forecast.
- MIlk is short. We have missed most of the rain and pastures are getting short. Customers are still getting milk, just not the full amount. Princess is getting closer and that should bring us back to our 4-5 gallons per day.
- Debra has been deep into peaches and pickles. Our small fruit orchard is starting to produce. It sure takes a long time and one has to be patient. We lost several last year due to that awful drought. We replaced three this year. We are losing our old apple tree in the chicken yard. The drought last year severly weakened it.
- The house we have been working on is finally done. We are waiting for an appraisal and for the city to finish the water hook up. If you know someone interested in a rural home on six acres, have them go to this URL, http://www.breezy-hill-farm.com/house-at-549-sw-vv.
- Chicken day went well at Virginia's. The next one will be in about 3 weeks. E-mail her and reserve your fryers. Make sure your freezer is stocked. I haven't checked prices lately, but I am sure at $3.25 it's 50% under prices elsewhere. If you are wanting a turkey let Virginia know.
- I have a short list for "dirt" hogs. Let me know. There will be some more available in about a week.
- There will be another "hamburger" day this fall. I already have a list started. There is a five pound minimum and it is still $4.50/lb

BREEZY HILL FARM WEEKLY UPDATE
- If you are interested in some "Dirt" hog pork, let me know. There will be some available in about two weeks. We are fortunate to be able to get quality hogs for market price. This past week I got a call from someone that had taken a hog to the processor, and their customer had backed out and wanted to know if I had a customer for the hog. I agreed, but only after their agreeing to my price. Their price was 30% more.
- Finally got the combining done. What a struggle. First, there was a delay getting help to start the combine, then we discoveredthe soy diesel fiasco (costly lesson). After the oats were done a bearing went out. Got that fixed and harvested the rye and finally the wheat. The wheat was a disaster due to the long wait and two wind storms. I will have my seed for the next crop and enough for our bread. There may be some for sale, but the chickens will not get any. They have plenty of oats and rye.
- The house at 549 St Rt VV, Centerview will be completed this week. If interested use google maps to see property. Hope to get some pictures and get a posting on CraigsList. We are hoping to find the right family for this energy efficient house on six acres. The land has never had any chemical fertilzers and has to the best of my knowledge(60 years) always been in grass.
- "People are fed by the food industry, which pays no attention to health, and are treated by the health industry, which pays no attention to food." Wendell Berry
- Anyone wanting an oxtail or some beef tallow let me know.
- Milk supply has decreased somewhat, due to the lack of rain and the hotter weather.

- Next chicken day will be Jul 26. Contact Virginia at raetdy@aol.com.
- Will have more "dirt" hogs in three weeks. If you want a half or whole let me know.
- We have two yogurt makers for sale. If interested they are $24 each.
- I've learned an expensive lesson about soy diesel. I didn't know that was what I ordered and when it is left in a motor for a long period it is costly. I knew ethanol was a serious problem for small engines, but I didn't know that I had soy diesel. So, I am still trying to get the rye and wheat done. I finished the oats yesterday. They were excellent.

- We finally were able to work cattle and with their current weights, and for now abundant grasses, we will be able to fill all of our present outstanding orders. Therefore, we have sent out notices to everyone. If you did not receive a notice that means you were not on my list. If the favorable weather continues we should have more this fall.
- I got word from Virginia that she is having a chicken day the coming Friday and there are about two dozen chickens extra. If you're interested sent her an email raetdy@aol.com.
- We are going to have a good crop of wheat and rye this year. If you are interested let me know.

BREEZY HILL FARM WEEKLY UPDATE
- Ground beef pick up will be this Saturday from 12-1pm at the farm. Several have responded and some have not. Be sure to let me know if you can make the pick up so I can get enough from the processor. I have limited capacity to store frozen meat, so I will pick up only what I need and leave the rest at the processor. I will send out a separate email tonight to those on my list. They will have first preference and if there is extra we will fill on a first come basis.
- We still could add some milk customers. Both cows are doing great.
- I think there will be some more pork available at the end of June. There were several people that offered to get the half I had due to a cancellation. I was not sure if I was to add them to the next list, so if you want a "dirt hog" be sure to email me.
- The grass is plentiful and the beeves are finishing quickly. We will be weighing them soon and will have several ready for processing. I have sent out several planning invoices but have not received the deposit which reserves your beef. Most have received a follow up notice. At the end of the month, if I have not received your deposit, they will go into a past due folder. I will continue down my list and those customers will have a chance to move up. I have several that have requested theirs for later this fall.

- Ground beef will be ready this week. I will know how many pounds will be available on Tuesday. I will send an email to those getting ground beef from this harvest. If you don't get an email you will move up on the list and will be on for the next time. Pick up will be this comiing Saturday at the farm between 12 and 1 pm. IF YOU CAN NOT MAKE THAT PLEASE SEND ME AN EMAIL SO I CAN NOTIFY THE NEXT PERSON.
- We had some extra milk so we skimmed the cream. That will make about a pound of butter and a batch of cottage cheese.
- We had new milk customers tour our garden. They were amazed that asparagus was growing up out of the ground, and it was different sizes. I guess they had only seen it at the grocery store, all the exact same size (diameter and length) with a rubber band holding it together.

- Ground beef is coming soon. I don't how much we will have. I will be emailing those on my list in the order in which I received the request. If you don't get an email you will move up on the list for the next ground beef harvest.
- Sweetpea is a milking machine. I have never had such a cow. My patience in raising my own cows has paid off. We are still waiting for responses from those we notified that were on our list waiting for raw A2 milk. Perhaps they have found another source, so send your requests and if we have an adequate supply we can add you as a regular weekly customer.
- If you are not making and drinking your own KOMBUCHA you are missing out. Don't go on line and pay 20-40 dollars for a SCOBY, just bring a wide mouth gallon jar and we will give you one. Remember, we have posted on our website Jason's instructions for correctly producing great Kombucha.
- Debra, our daughter Marlies and I attended the Michael Pollan event in KC this past Friday evening. He talked about his latest book, Cooked. They had a drawing after the presentation and guess what? I won a $100 gift for the West Side Local restaurant. Actually, we won as I filled out the entry form for all three tickets. It was Debra's birthday so I'm sure her ticket was the actual one drawn. By the way, Pollan's book is number three on the New York Times, non-fiction best sellers list.

- Sweetpea had her calf Monday morning. She had a heifer, another A2/A2. We have called everyone on the waiting list. We are still waiting for some replies. It looks like we can add a few more customers, so if you are interested send me an email and as supply allows we will call you. Be sure to include your phone number.
- We have sent several planning invoices for freezer beef. I wait a resonable time for the deposit to be returned to reserve your beef. I am not sending the invoices out until there is a good chance of having a beef ready. Last year was a disaster with the draught and having customers money tied up and no beef ready to take to the processor. REMEMBER, NO DEPOSIT NO BEEF.
