  • The first batch of chickens have been ordered.  They will be ready mid May.  We are holding the price the same as last year at least for this first batch.  The price is $3.25/#.  There is a five bird minimum.  If fuel prices go out of sight that will have a major impact on feed costs.  Should that happen we will have to adjust the price.  So, to lock in at last year's prices, order now.  We will do it the same as last year.  I keep a list as you email me, and when I get the number of chickens we have to process, I draw a line and notify you of the pick up day and time. 
  • I have several people waiting for a "Dirt Hog".  It  will be another two weeks.  If anyone is interested, let me know.
  • We are holding our prices for pasture finished beef the same as last year, $3.25/ lb hanging weight.  I read recently that the average price, according to  USDA, is $4.58.   Our price considering waste and trim is still less than $4/#.  Again, if fuel prices go up, we will have to adjust accordingly.  If you have ordered and sent your deposit, we will honor that price.  If we have to adjust our price, then any order received subsequently will be at the adjusted price.  We are going to be scheduling three beeves for each processing.  I have, in the past, done only two.  With increased fuel prices, I need to reduce the number of trips to the processor and that will also reduce my costs for delivering.
  • Goldie has a new home.  Daisey will soon have a new home.  I have some new heifers that I have raised, coming fresh and I needed to reduce the number of milk cows.  I still have two for sale that need a good home.
  • We have our plant bench started and some have already sprouted.   I wish everyone could see and taste the spinach that Debra has raised this year in our small green house.  I never tasted such great spinach.  We recently found some great tasting balsamic vinegar and olive oil.  It truly makes a difference.  Debra and I now fight for the last bite of Kale.  It is delicious.
  • Ryan and his friend, Andrew, came over yesterday and learned my recipe for the planting medium in out raised beds.  We got half of the beds refilled for the transplants that will soon be ready for planting.
  • They helped get the Purple Martin house ready.  The martins may be coming earlier this year.  This has truly been a mild winter.
  • Sweetpea and Kris should be calving in March, and we should again be able to honor all the milk for our old customers and be able to add some new ones.  We have two yogurt makers for sale.  They are $24 each.  I finished a good book recently, Artizan Bread in Five Minutes a Day, by Hertzberg.  I thing J. Jones has volunteered to check out the recipes and the process.

  • I had three ponds cleaned out this winter.  Tomorrow, since it has been so dry we are going to haul away the dirt.  We have several places to fill. 
  • We are working with a new dog.  She is 3/4  Great Pyrenees and 1/4 Anatolian.  The owner could no longer handle her in town.  Hopefully, she will make a good predator dog.  Marlies worked with her today and thinks she'll be just fine.  Maisey is a year old.
  • Anyone wanting a "dirt" hog needs to let me know.  I am expecting a call from my source in February.  Recent report from Iowa University states there is MRSA in store pork and their solution was to make sure you cook it properly.  They said nothing about handling it prior to cooking.  Thanks Jim H.  I think we had similiar information in an Update this past summer.

  • I recently received my lectures from the last ACRE's, USA conference.  This will be my Spring semester of learning.   We didn't go as Columbus, Oh is too far to go during the Winter.  Next year it will be in Louisville.  We'll see.

  • We had a rump roast recently from our current genetics.  We used the recipe that we have posted on our web site.  It was excellent.  We are very pleased with our decision to change the genetics by increasing the amount of Red Devon.
  • Debra and I delivered beef on Friday.  After picking up the beef, we went to Knob Noster, Grain Valley, Buckner, Liberty, North Kansas City, Topeka and finally Prairie Village.  It was a long day, but still it saved a lot of trips for our customers.  We enjoyed meeting new faces we've only known via emails.
  • Our ground beef pick up went well.  One person, who originally ordered 20 pounds had decided to just get 10 pounds.  I got a phone call this morning asking if I had another 10 pounds.  After trying the ground beef she wanted as much as she could get.  Fortunately, I had an extra 10 pounds. 
  • Jeff, while picking up ground beef, told me that Green Pastures has again offered the Ghee/Coconut blend.  Let me know if there is interest and we will place an order.  It is $47 per gallon plus your part of the shipping.
  • I will be taking three "dirt" hogs to the processor tomorrow.  Those getting the pork will get an email tomorrow.  I have another list started, but am not sure when the next ones will be ready.
  • I gave out Joel Salatin's latest book to several people.  I failed to enter the names and addresses of customers who received the book initially(several weeks ago).  If you would please check your copy and see if your name is entered on the inside of the hard cover at the top.  If not, please do the following: next to # 1. write your last name and your town and state.  This will key the next person to enter their name and town as #2.  Send me an email so I can update my list.  It is going to be interesting , a year from now, to see the journeys these books will experience.

  • My friend that raises the "dirt" hogs called and has three that will be ready this next week.  Let me know if you want a half or a whole.  I have one and a half already spoken for.
  • The ground beef is finally ready.  I should have enough for everyone that is still on my list.  I don't know how much there will be until Thursday.  As soon as I know, I will send an email to everyone on the list.  Pick up will be noon on Saturday, Jan 7 at the farm.  WATCH FOR AN EMAIL ON THURSDAY, if you don't get one that means I didn't get enough yield from this beef and you will go onto the next list. 
  • Sorry, we missed last Sunday, but we have had more challenges this past two weeks than I can describe.  Briefly, my sister passed unexpectedly, then Debra's father passed followed by her mother.  Last week we were in IL for her parents' funeral.  We have had several trips to Arkansas (where her parents lived for the past 12 years) and multiple phone calls dealing with a myriad of things.
  • Have started to feed some hay.  This would have been the perfect Winter, so far, had we not had the drought in the Fall.  The drought kept me from stockpiling enough grass for the cows.  But with the warm weather the cows don't need much and feeding hay in 40-50 degree weather is "a piece of cake".  I'm sure I'll get to feed some later with temps near zero and a north wind.  Since my tractor does not have a cab, I just put on several layers and use a hood my neighbor made using the pelt of a coyote.

  • I had hoped for the milk supply to last through December.  Rosebud is going dry, so I am down to just one cow.  That plus the lack of grass and the cold weather has just about ended the milk supply for this year.  We should be going again in the Spring.  Therefore, for now email me to see if we have any extra.   Especially, for those that have a long distance to drive
  • I will be delivering beef tomorrow.  Everyone has been notified.  The next round of ground beef will be soon.  I should know tomorrow when I can take the next one to be processed.  I will notify those that are getting ground beef just as soon as I find out how many pounds I have.  It will probably be in about two weeks, so watch our updates for the notice and then watch for your email.

  • I am still taking names for anyone wanting a "Dirt Hog".  It will be about another 6 weeks for the next opportunity.
  • The ground beef will be later this month.  If you are on the list and weren't on the last harvest, I will be sending you an email. 
  • I have one more harvest for this year for freezer beef.  It is Dec 22.  If all the ones that have requested beef send in their deposit, there will be no more until next year and that will depend alot on what kind of weather we have this Winter.
  • I have received the Salatin books and will be distributing them.  If you wanted one let me know.  I have a deal for you.
  • I am half way through a new book. Pottenger's Prophecy.  It is a very good book so far.  Those of you familiar with Dr. Pottenger's cat study will surely appreciate this book.  It is amazing what epigenetics is all about.  Genes can be turned on and off.  Be careful what you eat!!!!
  • Cholesterol sulfate is produced in large amounts in your skin when it is exposed to sunshine. When you are deficient in cholesterol sulfate from lack of sun exposure, your body employs another mechanism to increase it, as it is essential for optimal heart- and brain function. It does this by taking damaged LDL and turning it into plaque. Within the plaque, your blood platelets separate out the beneficial HDL cholesterol, and through a process involving homocysteine as a source of sulfate, the platelets go on to produce the cholesterol sulfate your heart and brain needs. However, this plaque also causes the unfortunate side effect of increasing your risk of cardiovascular disease.

  • The final turkey day went very well.  We had a 28 pounder and was it ever good.  In fact, it still is(left overs) and one breast is in the freezer for later. 
  • Three beeves are going to the processor tomorrow.  Those getting beef will get an email, as soon as I get the weights.  Watch for that email.
  • I have a half a "dirt" hog for someone.  This is great weather for curing your own bacons.
  • Milk supply has improved for a while.  Should hold up thru Dec.  We are slowly getting back to supplying our existing customers with their requests.  Now that you are getting more, you may want to freeze some for Jan and  Feb.  Remember, when it gets cold the machine doesn't work and the calves will be big enough to take it all.

    The end result is cheap calories, and lots of them, but largely in the form of genetically modified corn and soy, and loaded with chemical residues. This, in turn, is fueling a growing number of health epidemics, from obesity and type 2 diabetes to cancer and heart disease. Quite simply, producing food on a massive scale at the lowest price possible has taken precedence over obeying natural laws.
