                      BREEZY HILL FARM WEEKLY UPDATE

  • I recently replaced the air hose on my milker.  I noticed a difference when I installed it, but figured new is better.  Well, with the cold weather I found out differently.  The new one was a little thicker and somewhat stiffer.  I had trouble sliding it on the medal tubes.  With the cold weather it became even stiffer and it slipped off a couple of times.  I thought it was making a good contact.  There was just enough leakage that there was not sufficient vacuum and the cups would not stay on.  I replaced with the old more flexible hose and the problem was solved.
  • If you have not been called regarding raw A2 milk, send me an email.  We may be able to add you to our list.
  • Still taking orders for Coconut Oil, Ghee and Cod Liver Oil (from GreenPastures.org. We can get wholesale case lots at a reduced price.   Let me know.
  • Dirt hogs should be coming soon.  I have a list and could add two more.  Send me an email.
  • We got our FFA fruit this evening.  Our summer help, Tyler, who attends our local high school,  has been a big help and is a member of the FFA chapter.  He has a learned alot here on Breezy Hill, and it is interesting to hear him relate stories of his telling people what we do.  Definitely not current classroom curriculum.
  • I know you are no longer drinking diet sodas, but do you have a friend that still believes they are doing the “right” thing.

  • We are still adding names for a "dirt" hog.  We should have some later this month.
  • We are going to place an order with Green Pastures very soon, so let me know what you want.
  • We have added a couple of new milk customers.  I will be calling everyone on our old list, just to make sure not to overlook someone.  If anyone sent me an email recently requesting to be added, you should resend it just to make sure I haven't lost it.  Some of you may have located another source.  Most of our customers have not had any extra for some time and may not be in the habit of making yogurt.  Now is the time to start making yogurt again.  You should ramp up your immune systems for the winter months.  You are not getting as much sunshine now so your Vit D is low and I'm sure we will have some pan or epidemic soon.  I have a yogurt maker for sale.  It is only $15.  The jars are missing.  You would need to get 5 small half pint jelly jars.

                      BREEZY HILL FARM WEEKLY UPDATE

  • Kris had her calf last Tuesday and Princess had her calf this Monday.  Both were bull calves.  So, I have two boys and two girls.  With Princess we will now have ample milk if it doesn't get crazy cold.  Kris is my main nurse cow and will be raising three calves.  She will have her own and will supplement the other two.
  • Still need rain as ponds are still low.  Hopefully, we can make it until next Spring when we normally get more frequent rains.  Snow won't add much, usually not much run off.
  • I got my turkey from Virginia this afternoon.  We will be using a different method this year for roasting.  We tried it this past Sunday on a chicken and it worked wonderfully.  We got the procedure from  the latest magazine, Tastebuds.  The article is by the owner of Little Pig.  Basically, remove the thighs and legs and cook them sparately.  Cook the breast later and to only 150.  This solves the problem of getting the dark meat done and not cooking the breast meat to the point of being overcooked (dry).  The chicken Debra did was perfect.
  • We are taking names for Green Pastures for Ghee, Coconut oil and Cod Liver Oil items.
  •  Where will it stop?  My guess is next year it’ll move ahead even more.  http://www.nationofchange.org/tis-season-celebrate-mammon-1385309447

New USDA Rule Designed to Help Meatpackers Break Domestic Cattle Market

    Washington, D.C. -

Today the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) announced its plans to radically relaxU.S.import restrictions for countries where bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE or mad cow disease) continues to persist.

"Despite the fact that BSE persists in the European Union (EU), which reported four new BSE cases in 2013, the new USDA rule opens the door to allowU.S.meatpackers to begin supplementing tightU.S.beef supplies with beef of questionable safety from Europe," saidR-CALFUSACEO Bill Bullard.

Bullard continued: "USDA cannot explain why BSE persists in Europe despite the fact that all scientific measures that are believed to be effective at breaking the BSE cycle have been rigorously enforced inEuropefor nearly two decades.

"If you believe what USDA is telling the public - that BSE is no longer a concern in European livestock because all steps necessary to control BSE are already in place, then it is impossible forEuropeto be continually detecting new BSE cases. But this is exactly whatEuropecontinues to do as it has detected 83 new cases of BSE just since 2010.

"This irresponsible action by USDA underscores the need for country of origin labeling (COOL), which is presently under attack by meatpackers and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) in the federal court system, by members of Congress in the 2013 Farm Bill, and by foreign countries at the World Trade Organization (WTO)."

According to Bullard, COOL would provide consumers the opportunity to better safeguard their families by enabling them to avoid meat products from countries that have not controlled BSE and that cannot explain why they continue to detect the pernicious disease in their livestock.

Bullard said the new BSE rule represents the abrogation of USDA's responsibility to protect U.S. consumers and the U.S. cattle herd from the introduction of foreign animal disease and it exemplifies how USDA is acquiescing to the unelected and un-appointed officials at the WTO who have no loyalties whatsoever to U.S. livestock producers or to U.S. consumers.

"USDA is working closely with the multinational meatpackers to open new import platforms so they can break theU.S.cattle market that has only recently reached profitable levels after being severely depressed for more than a decade. Cargill's recent announcement that it has partnered with an Australian exporter to import grain-fed and grass-fed beef in theU.S.will now be followed by announcements to further increase price-depressing imports fromEurope, thanks to USDA," Bullard concluded.

                      BREEZY HILL FARM WEEKLY UPDATE

  • Have you noticed, they have brought out the scare tactic of $8 per gallon for milk if congress doesn't pass the "farm" bill?  If that is the true cost without the government subsidy for the manufactured gallon, then my price for a gallon on milk (with a pint of cream) is below production cost.  If anyone thinks congress will pass a new farm bill, they have more confidence in that bunch than I have.  Remember, the bill is for 5 years.  They can't agree on anything for a week. After seeing the results for the GMO labeling in the senate, it reinforces my contention, they are bought and paid for and not by their salaries.  Seventy-one voted against despite polls showing 90 percent of the country would like to see their food labeled accordingly.
  • Remember, if you want a free range turkey contact Virginia, raetdy@aol.com
  • We are weaning some more calves and they are still bawling.  About one more day and it will be done.
  • Kris still hasn't had her calf.  I was concerned and had the vet check her on Friday.  He said all was ok.   Maybe tomorrow.
  •  Green house is filling up for the winter.  Lots of spinach and lettuces.
  • We still have a house for sale and now a studio apartment above the coffee shop for rent.  We just finished installing a new bamboo floor in the apartment.

                      BREEZY HILL FARM WEEKLY UPDATE

  • I recently was behind a young woman at the check out at our local grocery store.  She had at least 40 of those rather small yogurts.  I made a comment, "you must really like yogurt".  Her response, "I have three daughters, they love yogurt and it is on sale".  I hesitated and replied, "you should make your own yogurt".  To which she replied, "that would take too much time".  Too much time?  That's almost like it takes too much time to boil water.
  • We have pretty much caught up with milk for our existing customers.  We could add some more as we have another cow due to calve. If you want to be added send us an email.
  • This past Saturday we had a ground beef pick up.  It went very well.  I have a new list started and can add some more.  I will be sending an email to those presently on the list to make sure those are still wanting ground beef.  Remember, it is still half priced compared to the price at Nature's Pantry, $4.75/lb.  Their price is $8 to $10/lb.
  • I finished Jo Robinson's book, Eating on the Wild Side.  Excellent book.  I highly recommend it if you are interested in optimizing your health.  It takes your knowledge of health to a higher level.
  • We have a new  good source for "Dirt" hogs, so let me know and I can add you to the list.
  • A very important vote to label GMO's is taking place in the state of Washington tomorrow.

  •                       BREEZY HILL FARM WEEKLY UPDATE

  • Recently finished Michael Pollan's book, Cooked.  It is, as expected from Pollan, a very good book and well worth reading.
  • I am now reading Jo Robinson's new book, Eating on the Wild Side.  If you want to know which varities of vegetables to buy and/or plant you will want to add this book to your library.  Learn which have the most phytonutrients, and how fast those degrade in storage.  Learn how to double the anti-oxidant value of lettuce and how to double the storage time in the refirigerator.  Oh yes, if you don't know a very important property of garlic, you won't get the often touted medicinal benefits.  You will learn a limeric so you'll never again ruin the garlic.
  • Next chicken day is this coming weekend.  The last one will be Nov 9.  Stock up for coming winter and spring.  Contact Virginia, raetdy@aol.com.  I think they have changed the feeding ration, so check with her.
  • More ground beef is coming soon, so if you are not on my list, send me an email.  Be sure to include how much you want.  Price is the same $4.75/ pound.  If you want the Nature's Pantry ground beef, be prepared to pay $8-10/lb.
  • Karen had a heifer calf.  We will be calling those of you who have been patiently waiting for A2 raw milk.
  • Our quarterly copy of Wise Traditions arrived today and they have included the latest research on GMO foods.  They have avoided this topic as most of their readers already were avoiding the few GMO grains, but now more and more grains are being converted, either directly or indirectly.  If you are concerned about health issues you should join the Weston A. Price Foundation,  www.westonaprice.org, and you will receive the quarterly publications.  All their articles are very well documented/referenced.
  • We still have the 549 house and the KCP&L $49,800 rebate is coming to an end Dec 31.  Just think 3400 square feet, six acres, the only utility cost water.  Your electric (heating and cooling) would be zero.
  • We have pint glass bottles, free, for those making KOMBUCHA.
  • I am enclosing this a second time.  Make sure you read this and send it to a friend.

                      BREEZY HILL FARM WEEKLY UPDATE

  • We returned Thursday from our trip to Phoenix.  We helped our daughter Marlies with her move.  She finally finished her doctorate degree in Medical Nutrition Science (human nutrition).  We logged 3000 miles and visited the Grand Canyon on the last day before it closed.  Enjoyed other places, Flagstaff, Sedona, Santa Fe,  Taos and many miles of range land.  We returned using only about 10 miles of interstate highways.  The interstates are full of trucks.
  • Thanks to all that picked up their ground beef last Saturday.  It was nice to know it went well while we were driving in a down- pour all the way to Tulsa.  And how much did we get?  Not much.  There wasn't enough to measure.  We are still very dry.  Missed a "sure bet" on Friday, as well.
  • We are still adding to our ground beef list. And I am searching for more "dirt" hogs.  Remember, if you want chickens and a turkey contact Virginia,  raetdy@aol.com.
  • We did not place the order to Green Pastures last week, as we didn't want it delivered while we were gone.  The order will be placed this Tuesday.  If there is something you want, let me know.  We don't make that many orders, so plan accordingly.
  • Milk is still very short. We are waiting for two cows to freshen.  We have plently of eggs.

  • The ground beef that everyone has been waiting patiently for is dry ageing.  As soon as I find out how many pounds I will go down the list and notify those that will be getting their requested amount.  If you do not get an email, that means you are on the next list in the same order.  We went to Nature's Pantry today, and I some good news for those fortunate to get our ground beef, it is $10.89 for their "organic" beef.  Our price at $4.75 is less than half of theirs.  It is difficult to price ground beef, as one never knows the yield until it is ground.  Their roasts are $8.99.  Remember, our freezer beef is still just $3.50/#.
  • If you want chickens, contact Virginia.  Nature's Pantry has whole fryers for $6.99.  Her email address is raetdy@aol.com.
  • We are extremely dry.  Big cracks are forming.  We need 3-4 inches.  At least this year the ponds still have water.
  • I still have not heard from the Kiger's.  Their deposit may become my Christmas present.

                      BREEZY HILL FARM WEEKLY UPDATE

  • Very busy time of the year.  Seems everything ripens at the same time.  We got our sweet corn in late due to wet weather and now we are swamped with corn.  Green beans are producing, elderberries and grapes are being juiced, tomatoes by the bucket and the beeves are finishing.
  • We finally got some rain.  I emphasize "some".  We got a quarter of an inch and just five miles to our east they had 2 inches.  We need 3-5 inches to get grasses growing for fall and winter stockpiling.
  • Will be weighing and sorting cattle this next week.  I wanted to do it last week, but it was too hot and would have been too stressful for the cattle.  We should have several ready to send to the processor, so those of you that have been patiently waiting will soon get an email with instructions to call Gilbert's.
  • I still have a check for a half of beef from someone named Kiger.  It is check number 2811.  I have no invoice nor email for a "Kiger".  If your name is Kiger or you know a Kiger, please notify me.
  • The house at 549 VV is now listed on Zillow.  Just enter Centerview, Mo.
