Breezy Hill Update Nov 9, 2014

            BREEZY HILL FARM WEEKLY UPDATE

  • Thanks to all who received their beef this past Friday and Saturday.  Jason, a third grader, did exceptional.  I was impressed.
  • Those of you who took advantage of the short notice for a "Dirt Hog" are going to be very pleased.  They were maybe the best we have ever found.  We have had several people trying to sell us hogs, and after we find out how they are raising their hogs we politely decline.  Good, raised on dirt, hogs are hard to find.
  • Speaking of hogs.  A Callaway County hog "farm", factory is seeking to expand its operation, and just had a 10,000 gallon waste spill, found by a neighbor.  The spill ran into Millers Creek and into the Mark Twain National Forest.  I guess, if the neighbor had not reported it, they would have continued "business as normal".   There were several meetings in Columbia this past week protesting the expansion of the CAFO.  The actual contractor is a large operation based in Iowa.  The Callaway "farmer" is merely under contract to the Iowa corporation.
  • I found the best book yet on making cheese, owning a milk cow, and recipes using milk products.  Milk Cow Kitchen, by MaryJane Butters.  Yes, that's her name.
  • Allan Nation, publisher of the The Grass Farmer monthly magazine, was recently in Kansas City.  He was one of the judges for a meat tasting competition.  It was held in conjunction with the American Royal.  For now, there are two divisions, one grain fed and one grass fed.  When it was started the various sponsors did not want to have a head-to-head competition.  The guy in charge is rethinking that position and may, in the future, make a change.  The consensus of the judges was that the grass fed would have cleaned up, except for one grass fed steak.  Breezy Hill is confident that natural, grass finished beef is not only a more healthy protein, but it is the right way to raise a beef animal.
  •  New to me. Another great reason to have a gallon of coconut oil in your pantry.  http://foodmatters.tv/articles-1/the-7-health-benefits-of-oil-pulling?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=FM+NL+-+September+17+2014&utm_content=FM+NL+-+September+17+2014+CID_85d370c54f2b4c0deb72c269c570a31c&utm_source=Campaign%20Monitor%20Email%20Marketing&utm_term=READ%20MORE
  •  I’m going to include the following for two weeks in a row just to make sure you read it. BE SURE TO INCLUDE THIS IN YOUR FACEBOOK POSTS AND WHERE EVER ELSE. !!!!!

MIT Scientist Exposes Consequence of Monsanto’s Glyphosate and Aluminum Cocktail

http://www.nationofchange.org/mit-scientist-exposes-consequence-monsanto-s-glyphosate-and-aluminum-cocktail-1410963518    AND NOW YOU KNOW WHY GMO LABELING IS SO IMPORTANT, AND WHY YOU ASK THE GUY AT THE LOCAL FARMERS MARKET IF HE USES TOXIC SPRAYS ON THE PRODUCE YOU ARE ABOUT TO PURCHASE.
